How the Dog Ibuprofen Toxicity Calculator works

Methodology

Estimated dose = pill strength (mg) × number swallowed ÷ dog weight (kg). Veterinary references report acute gastrointestinal signs around 100–125 mg/kg, renal failure around 175–300 mg/kg, severe neurologic effects above 400 mg/kg and potentially lethal exposures above 600 mg/kg. Individual risk can occur outside these ranges.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give my dog ibuprofen for pain?+

Ibuprofen is not recommended for dogs unless specifically directed by a veterinarian. Human over-the-counter dosing should not be used for pets.

What if my dog only ate one pill?+

Risk depends heavily on dog size and pill strength. A single tablet can be significant for a small dog, so contact a veterinarian or poison service for advice.

Important veterinary note

Calculator outputs are estimates for education and planning. They do not diagnose disease, replace a physical examination, or override advice from a veterinarian who knows your dog.
